Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the analytical conclusions from a thorough survey of social inequality in a Bulgarian village, a survey in which various methods have been used. The background information includes data from national statistical and sociological surveys as well as a special survey using questionnaires distributed by mail to all regions of the country. The stress is on the data from the questionnaires applied to all 624 households in the chosen village, covering 1776 adults, as well as the in-depth interviews of representatives from the basic social categories in the same village. A methodology for social group and strata identification of all villagers is suggested using different and additional criteria and factors. Pictures of stratification structures in the village in 1989 and 1996 are compared. The paper studies the genesis of the new inequalities as they grow out of the former differentiation, the heritage of the previous disparate positions and how they affect people in the present.
