Summary/Abstract: The Habsburg Army between 1890 and 1914 was in many ways under attack within the Monarchy. Part of its defence mechanism was to see itself as a 'state within the state' relying on a code of honour and a separate military justice system. However, social forces meant in fact that it came more and more to resemble the wider society of the Monarchy.
