Summary/Abstract: The article examines the relationship between repose and activity, with a short digression on the development of leisure time. The reasoning starts by exploring the negative and positive emotional attitudes arising from our idealistic mental representations of repose and non-activity. Next, it examines the influence of our hectic daily routine on the inner development of the desire for non-activity and leisure. It also illustrates the relationship of different types of personality to destructive and nurturing forms of activity. Finally, the essay offers ways of avoiding overwork and methods for an effective control over life routine that may solve the problem of the Janus-faced leisure.
