Summary/Abstract: After Romania’s accession to the UN in December 1955, the year 1956 was one of thorough organization of the small Romanian community established at the global institution. The symbolic recognition of the presence of Bucharest’s representatives in New York came on the 9th of March, when the flag of the Romanian Popular Republic was hoisted at the UN headquarters. Also in March the diplomatic team led by Athanase Joja arrived in the United States. The Romanians have kept close ties with the UN General Secretary, Dag Hammarskjöld, and came up with several proposals meant to make them noticed within the global institution: holding of a seminar on women’s rights, proposals for the Atomic Agency. However, the archive documents reveal that the Romanians were being advised by the soviets regarding all the important steps they were taking in the UN and strictly followed their advice. Basically, the communist states that had representatives at the global institution were coordinated by soviet diplomats. The good relations established by the Romanians at the United Nations in the first part of the year 1956, during the first political thaw of the Cold War, were abruptly interrupted by the forcefully return of the global crisis: the Suez crisis and USSR’s invasion of Hungary.
