Summary/Abstract: The text is part of an ampler study dedicated to figures of sovereigns used by the late Latin breviaria wrote by Aurelius Victor, Eutropius, Festus and Pseudo-Aurelius Victor (Epitome de Caesaribus) as exemplum – a wellknown literary procedure, which benefits from an impressive bibliography. The author chooses to use Tarquinius Priscus, who is featured as exemplum in two fragments of Aurelius Victor’s work: Caes., 4, 15 (the description of Claudius’ death) and Caes., 11, 12-13 (where the “constitutional” innovation following Domitianus’ death is discussed; more precisely, the provincials’ access to the throne). We believe that our historian uses the two exempla as comparisons and they have a “biographical”, personal meaning: the first illustrates the antifeminism of the author, while the second underlines the role of provincials, of “foreigners,” of “new people” in the history of Rome, considering that Aurelius Victor himself was a provincialis, an externus, a homo nouus.
