Summary/Abstract: Studies of child and youth development threats and of the protective factors show that relationships with significant supporting adults (parents, teachers etc.) limit the risk of various problem behaviours. These relationships may be formal or informal and are referred to as mentoring. Unfortunately, the same studies indicate that adults do not form mentoring bonds with young people frequently enough. It is particularly discontenting in case of teachers, who having the opportunity to become mentors, do not seize it – especially when students cannot rely on their relatives. Such a situation may be caused by the fact that in Polish schools there is little room for dialogue, which lies at the basis of creating a mentoring relationship. The article attempts to describe the problem and point to its possible roots.
