Summary/Abstract: The Second Republic – proclaimed on the 14th of April of 1931 – was the first permanent democratic system in contemporary Spanish history and resulted in numerous political, social and economic changes. Among the reforms figured those measures which aimed at the improvement of women’s living conditions. Women were not only able to hold public offices, but also acquired various rights in terms of marriage and domestic matters, furthermore in the field of education. The 1931 Republican Constitution included the introduction of women’s suffrage, recognized equality between genders for the first time in the history of Spain and enacted civil marriage and divorce. In this respect, Spain became one of the most progressive countries in Europe.
