Summary/Abstract: More than a century ago, aesthetic interest in plastic arts manifested itself for the first time in the Romanian society. Exhibitions and private showings attracted more and more visitors, and occasional chroniclers gradually became genuine art critics. The most appropriate channel for the dissemination of aesthetic principles and ideas proved to be the cultural press through numerous publications, issued especially after 1900. Although the conceptual gap in terms of current aesthetic thinking and European plastic art styles between ordinary Romanian chroniclers and art critics in Western Europe was difficult to bridge in such a short period of time, in the early years of the last century it diminished significantly. This was possible through the publication of the first treaties and articles on aesthetics and its social impact. Romanian art critics quoted and analysed aesthetic concepts and ideas published in prestigious European magazines, such as “Gazette des Beaux-Arts”, “Il Marzocco”, “La Revue du Temps Present” and so on, ideas to which most adhered unconditionally or that others, on the contrary, rejected, in whole or in part. The publications took interest in the development of plastic arts, subsumed under the modern Romanian culture and works on plastic aesthetics, written by theorists and critics, often proved to be divergent. Maybe it was because of this very divergence that the polemic created eventually turned out to be constructive.
