The Bogomil Heresy: A Successor to and Bearer of the Ideas of Gnostic Dualism

Summary/Abstract: The problem of the Bogomil heresy is one of considerable importance to Bulgarian history and culture. In research works, however, the question of the connection between the Bogomil cosmogony and the teaching of the ancient gnostic dualists has been laid aside. The author has tried to present in a comparative aspect the dependence of the Bogomil cosmogony on the teaching of the gnostics (eastern and western) about the world. Referring likewise to some of the ancient Greek philosophers, he defends the thesis of the Bulgarian Bogomil movement being the last manifestation of the dualism in philosophy, which later on found a place in Christian heretical teachings.
