Summary/Abstract: Regional specifics of employment and unemployment in the period of transition towards market economy are viewed in relation to the economic and demographical crises, under whose influence unequal poles of development are formed. As basic factors for intensifying regional differentiation and inequality in labour market, are seen mainly the peculiarities of regional economy, the degree of socio-economic development of separate regions, and the demographical structure of labour force (by sex, age, education, ethnic ties). The drop in employment and high unemployment in the villages and poorly developed regions (mountainous, border and primarily agrarian areas) are pointed out as negative tendencies. Badly affected by the latter are ethnic Turks and gypsies. In the years of transition women's, youth's and long-term unemployment stands out as a serious problem. The risk groups, affected by unemployment, include also people of no profession, and of low level of education, and qualification. Depopulation, decrease in the number of active population, and aging, characteristic for certain regions, also have certain influence upon regional specifics of employment and unemployment. The negative consequences of unemployment directly affect the income and structure of consumption of families where members belong to risk groups, thus, placing them in the category of impoverished population. The inequality of labour market is transformed into economic and social inequality with respect to directly affected individuals and their families.
