Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the narrative strategies of Šegedin’s novel Crni smješak (The Dark Smile) starting from the assumption that it is necessary to recognize the ethical and political implications of its peculiar narrative structure. Its semantic effect can be understood as an invitation to the reader to get involved in the process of semantic production as its necessary participant. This leads to the realization of the possibility of establishing a new and democratic system of semantic production within an aesthetic practice. By analyzing and theoretically elaborating the concepts of frame and, especially, dialogue, which are recognized as the key concepts for the reading of Šegedin’s novel, the article tries to identify the consequences of the novel’s openness to the intervention of the reader and other instances, i.e. the effects of establishing a peculiar mechanism of semantic production – the dialogic process.
