Summary/Abstract: Family therapy began in the early ’50s, and its evolution was not the same without the outstanding contribution of social workers. A review of periods from therapy’s development and family therapy trainers’ school is pursued in this article by a summary of the originators of social workers and family therapeutic models, and of their contributions to the scientific development area. Is developing as a distinct entity, family therapy arrive in time to create not only close models to engaging in social care but social services addressing directly to the client of social services. Family therapy and social assistance, as distinct areas of knowledge and intervention, were interconnected and have influenced each other over time.
