Summary/Abstract: The article aims to present a scientific discussion and to distinguish two approaches to educational inequalities. The first is the social-cultural approach developed by Pierre Bourdieu, which takes into account the importance of cultural capital for reproducing inequalities; the second is the approach developed by John Goldthorpe related to the socially structured individual educational choices, the leading concept of which is „cultural resources“. Key importance is attached to the theoretical distinction, argued by Raymond Boudon, between primary and secondary effects of origin upon the educational achievements. The second approach is relatively less represented in Bulgarian sociology, but its importance is growing at present. The author’s analysis presents some empirical results from the application of this approach in European and Bulgarian contexts.
