Summary/Abstract: The article is markedly polemical. The author argues against the moralizing attitude to the person and theoretical legacy of Karl Marx, hence against the general trend to ethical reduction of social topics. In the spirit of critical theory the article defends the view that the basic ethical categories of 'good' and 'evil' not only fail to help us understand capitalist society, but are even a major obstacle to interpreting it as a system that functions independently of the conscious will of social agents. The main references are to those works of Marx and Adorno that directly concern the relation between moral critique and critical social theory.
