Summary/Abstract: The Theology Faculty of Cernăuţi has been one of the most renowned institutions of its kind in Romania and not only. Among its professors, reverend Ioan Zugrav occupies a special place as he worked there in the last decade of its existence, between 1938 and 1948. Showing a particular propensity for historical theology, Ioan Zugrav wrote and defended his doctoral thesis in the field with a research topic on the Church union attempts from the council of Lyon (1274) to the council of Florence (1439). After conducting thorough specialised studies in Church history, he wrote and published many works, predominantly historical works, but also liturgical or pastoral ones, thus making a significant contribution to the history and life of the Church in Bukovina. As unfairly little has been written about Professor Ioan Zugrav, the aim of this study is, to a certain extent, a moral and scientific recovery of the one who served the church and the theological education from Bukcovina. More precisely, the study presents Professor Ioan Zugrav’s life and scientific work, the latter from the time he toiled as university professor in Cernăuţi, when he published his historical and theological works in the official journal of the Metropolitan See of Bukovina, “Candela”.
