Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt at an analysis of the interaction of the institutions, the state and society, regarding Bulgaria’s path to Europe. The objective has been to see the result of the structuring of a “European” identity in Bulgarian society, and the influence of that process, guided by the national institutions and the political elite, on the national identity, generally. In this attempt the government circles emphasise on the need of a change, of “Europeization” of the Bulgarian, in particular, and of the nation as a whole. Coming from the non-governmental sector, in their overwhelming majority, the ideas are aimed at making society review conceptions like nation and national identity. From the field research material presented, it can be seen that what has been defined as national identity by the elite is not the same to the informants. It has turned out that the Bulgarian identity “stands” closest to the definition of the conception of Kulturnation – a largely passive community, which lacks political loyalty and legitimation. It can likewise be noted that simultaneously with the formation of the conception of Europe, the conception of Bulgaria and of the people, themselves, is also changing. The national symbolism and mythology cede their places to the individual experience, drawn from life in a certain cultural environment.
