Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the proposed switch to the Latin alphabet in Kazakhstan. It analyses how the issue of changing the script becomes politicized in a multiethnic post-Soviet state with a large Russian-speaking population, including the ethnic Kazakhs. It examines the way geopolitical considerations influence language issues and in particular, relations with Russia.
