Summary/Abstract: Historical Vas county is one of the most ethnic diverse regions of the Carpathian Basin. Nowadays it lies in three countries, Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. Beside the majority there are some ethnic minorities (Hungarians and Croatians in Austria, Germans, Croats and Slovenes in Hungary, Hungarians in Slovenia) as well. We could use Ethnic Diversity Index (EDI) describing the diversity of population. The ethnic diversity is relatively small in the settlements (most of them ethnic homogeneous), but the whole county is diverse. During the 20th century the ethnic diversity of regions in both countries diminished, but at some settlements increased because of the assimilation of minorities. We also used other quantitative methods like index of dissimilarity and segregation.
