Between Slavonic Bucolic and Romantic Story: Semiophors by Izabela Czartoryska

Summary/Abstract: The author analyses objects from the Museum of Izabela Czartoryska in Puławy including Krzysztof Pomian’s concept of ‘semiophors’. In her museum, which can be considered as a memory place, Princess Izabela Czartoryska proposed her own vision of natural history, strongly mixed with the myths of great past. The aim of the reconstruction and analyses of museum rituals is to show their social, political and cultural utility in the special Polish situation in the early 19th century.
