Summary/Abstract: The influence of Romantic myths on perception of spiritual culture of ancient Slavs in contemporary Arts has grown thanks to Maria Janion’s essays (Niesamowita Słowiańszczyzna, Cracow 2007). Making the close relation of two elements, i.e. Slavonic culture and paganism the central idea, the Author referred to the model dividing the world into two circles: paganism and Christianity, thus accepting the perspective which is close not so much to pre-Christian Slavonic societies as to Christian clergy working on their conversion. The Chronicle by Helmold of Bosau may be a good example. He was a priest who worked in the 2nd part of the 12th century among Polabian tribes and connected the notion of Slavia (Slavonic culture) in the missionary context with the pagan circle. The article outlines practical research on ancient Slavonic religion and its cultural interpretation in Middle Ages; there are also references to anthropological attempts to depict their attitudes towards the change of religion. The study also refers to the use of medieval studies in Niesamowita Słowiańszczyzna. In this light, the judgment on inefficiency offered in this collection of the way of study on the history of ideas concerning characteristics of the attitudes of ancient Slavs and their behavior when facing the breakthrough transformation in social life seems entirely justified.
