With a Guidebook among Slavs

Summary/Abstract: The declared narrative perspective in guidebooks of Slavonic countries written by representatives of West-European or American culture is negated by the existence of narrative clichés reflecting cognitive stereotypes.The hidden basis of the description is the opposition of East and West, including further binary trends: cold/warm, heavy/light, dark/light, pessimistic/optimistic, and eventually nature/ civilization. This mythological geography of Slavonic countries is supported not only by Eastern studies but also by the myth of post-soviet block. The guidebooks prove that narrative character and declared mimetic nature are both performative and that they create the described reality.
