Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the specifics of creative processes in contemporary theatre practices. It focuses on the documented observations by theatre researchers Helen Freshwater and Jackie Smart of two performances (“Delirium” and “The Arab and The Jew”) by British theatre companies Gecko and Theatre O. Common to both cases is the methodology of making a show: devising-based performances or collaborative work. Devising is a process of creating a performance from scratch, using a complex of group methods, without a pre-existing script. With collaborative work the emphasis is on the individuality, personal experience and creativity of each of the participants in the process. Devising is associated also with experiments and active communication with audiences. Thematically, both performances under consideration focus on “brotherhood”: the relationship between brothers in the contemporary interpretation of theatre O, who collaborated with playwright Enda Walsh on an adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s “The Brothers Karamazov” and brotherhood as a choice in Gecko’s in “The Arab and The Jew”.
