Summary/Abstract: The end of socialist Yugoslavia, the collapse of the Socialist bloc and the resulting instability of the Balkan region left Bosnia and Herzegovina exposed to various external influences, both from the East and the West. The vacuum that was created by the breakdown of the entire social fabric in the region was filled with activities of external actors and their local proxies. The country’s exposure to external influence also provided a leeway for many Islamic players to exert their influence and power.
