Summary/Abstract: Richard Holbrooke certainly made his mark on the course of history; and not only on that of the Balkans.His first post in the diplomatic service was Saigon in 1963. He spent five years in Vietnam, he participated in the Paris peace talks with the North Vietnamese. And his career from there was dynamic to say the least: after Vietnam, he was a Peace Corps director in Morocco, a managing editor of Foreign Policy, and the US diplomat assigned to East Asia when normal relations were established with China in 1979.
