Summary/Abstract: Polyeucte Corneille’s sacred, providential tragedy, written under the influence of the years 1634-1648, is one of the expressions of a crisis of confidence in the French political order. Trying to create a balance between the hero and the State, the author will modify, through its main character, the tragic stake – pity and terror will be replaced by the will to please, move and instruct, leading to a realistic tragedy, a political and Christian one, with the center of interest on the Grace drama. The efficacious grace places the hero on an ascending scale. Polyeucte devotes his energies to saving the temporal world and discovers God’s path in history. His sacrifice contributes to the progress of humanity.
