Summary/Abstract: A review of demographic age of populations, general mortality and life expectancy at birth and at exact age 15, 45 and 65 years in 46 European countries is presented. Using data published in 1999 in the Recent Demographic Developments in Europe, all European countries are divided into two main categories. In the first one, practically all countries with developed market economy, demographically old populations and ever rising life expectancy are included. The second group is constituted by the countries in transition to market economy, whose populations are equally old, but life expectancy has been gradually reduced during last three decades and especially during the last one. The author concludes that demographic aging of populations does not necessarily cause rising of mortality. Moreover, it is not responsible for the unfavourable trends in mortality, which are mainly due to lack of efficient preventive programs and to worsening social status of the majority of populations as well.
