Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the techniques of history’s reconstruction and interpretation in the plays by Kazys Saja, „Vežimo“ kompanija (Baimė) (The ‘Carriage‘ Company Fear, 1965 / 1966) and Žemaičių piemuo (The Samogitian Shepherd, 1987). It raises a question of how much the playwright’s conception depends on political and social factors and is focused on a specific communicative community (whose part is the author himself). Using Patrice Pavis’ term ‘strategies’ and Jean-Marie Thomasseau’s ‘the typology of the dramatic text’ (narration and narrative text), the article focuses on different strategies of the author and the text, which attempt to influence the process of reading, to shape reader’s attitude and interpretation. It shows how in the historical plays, Saja, using paratext, intertextual references and protagonist’s external and internal characteristics, develops a structured system of the values and world-view.
