Summary/Abstract: As a social norm of organisation, the exogamous family circle among the Bulgar¬ians brings together only these relatives, who stringently observe the common ban on intermarriage. During the second half of the 19th and the early 20th century, included within its boundaries were a few categories of relations, representing blood kinship, kinship by marriage, association by virtue of being godpatrens (best man or bride's maid in the Bulgarian marriage ritual) and sworn fraternity. The present study follows the kinship relations between the individual rela¬tive (Ego) and his/her blood relations, making up his/her personal exogamous family circle by birth. The division of blood kinship into kinship by direct relationship and collateral kinship enables the author to present her work into two parts: "Reg¬istering Direct Family Kinship" and "Registering Collateral Kinship". The second part will be carried by the next issue of the "Bulgarian ethnology" journal.
