Summary/Abstract: The article proposes to provide a historical overview of the journalistic style known as “literary” or “narrative” by tracing its roots to the 18th century essay periodicals and by outlining its close ties to fiction writing through all of its three major periods of development inside successive literary paradigmatic frameworks - from the 19th century American realism and naturalism to the modernism of the first decades of the 20th century and into the postmodernist decades of the 60s and 70s - suggesting, in this way, that journalism’s professional pledge to factuality can be both challenged and assisted by the aesthetic quality of the prose in which its facts are narrated.
