Summary/Abstract: Paul Berg, principal discoverer of “gene tailoring”, initiated the historic Asilomar Conference of molecular geneticists (1975), which extended the classical ecologically oriented bioethics, founded by Van Rensselaer Potter (1971), to the new field of future genetic modification technologies. Thus, the early development of bioethics should be seen as consisting of two main streams, named here “Potter-Ethics” and “Berg-Ethics”. It can be said that the two lines complement into what is recently called “Integrative Bio-ethics”, a unified multidisciplinary research branch dealing with ethical problems in the application of the new biological knowledge.
