Summary/Abstract: The press always presents the facts of the past and from the past simply as facts, as something that happened. Confirmation or an independent source is sought as a warrant of veracity. Most important for the press is the documentation of the event and relevance of the fiction, the narrative. The corpus analysed consists of material published in Bulgarian daily newspapers, afternoon and evening issues, as well as from specialised weekly publications intended mainly for a female readership. When venturing behind the multitude of headlines, one discovers that the predominant part of these publications is aimed at women, although this might not be suggested or encoded in the name of the publication. The personal stories are mainly for and about women, there are no independent stories about men - men figure either as parts of couples with women, or appear in the story as a counterpoint to some female.
