Summary/Abstract: In the second half of the 20th century, a number of the large industrial cities in the west, which once prospered on the economic base of the 19th and 20th centuries industry development, had undergone a considerable economical difficulties. Rapid slide of the traditional industries was leading to economic decline, massive job loses and accompanying social problems. In these circumstances, during the seventies, the emphasis of the economic activity of the most western cities have shifted from the industry to the service economy and an emerging knowledge economy. This paper provides an analysis of the reasons that led to the crisis of the industrial city and emergence of the new postindustrial urban system. It provides a comparative analysis of the most noticeable trends concerning the contemporary city and its functional change in the post-industrial era. Special attention is given to the new role of the cities in the process of economic and cultural globalization when they have become more and more important as places to visit, to take part in social events, and to have cultural experiences.
