Summary/Abstract: Artists’ attempts to directly intervene in their environment can be traced far back in the history of art. As this tradition has developed, public space has become more and more fascinating for performers who willing to test its potential to allow for creative affirmation. Streets, marketplaces, public squares, parks, parking lots, harbours, public transport, crossroads, traffic intersections, shopping centres, bookshops and squatter camps have all become places where one can interfere throught creative gesture in the often monotonous flow of public space. Whatever the motivations might be for carrying out a performative action or intervention in public space, these events illustrate the artists’ strong desire for involvement in their immediate surroundings. However, does the material openness of these places guarantee the public nature of these works ?
