Summary/Abstract: The fall of the communist regimes caused the systems of domestic surveillance – in effect for decades in the majority of the East and Southeast European states – to collapse. The voluminous archives of the former secret police organisations in these countries present impressive evidence of a system of control and persecution to which the citizens were subjected. Twenty years after the fall of communism coming to terms with the records of the secret police is still a highly sensitive issue in the successor states.
