Summary/Abstract: Starting with the finding of the overwhelming frequency of the word suoare (with the meaning of defense, derrived from the latin SUO + AR) in an oriental Romanity’s old text, this article sets out to demonstrate that the Spanish anthroponym Suárez is a lineage nickname, explainable through a defensive tendency or an aff ective defense of the altar. The arguments in favour of this thesis can be found in medieval literature’s classic dictionaries, for example in Count Lucanor.
