Summary/Abstract: The article deals with some of the results of the extensive research carried out at VGTU. The authors give the overview of the concept of metacognition, its constituent parts, as well as suggest the detailed analysis of the processed data. The main research hypothesis that students mastered their metacognitive strategy and tactics in the learning process usually achieve better results is proved statistically. One of the conclusions made is that current needs (social, cultural, technological changes in the society) towards foreign language learning do not require short-term knowledge. Rather they require flexibility and higher order thinking skills which are a part of metacognition.
