Summary/Abstract: Zoltán Varga investigates how popular film culture reflects on the duel and the dichotomy between machine and man. In Varga's opinion this problem is portrayed not only in an action-oriented way but also by means of a philosophical-intellectual discourse. As one of the theoreticians, Tzvetan Todorov suggests, the characters of these stories: robots, androids, and half-man, half-machine beings, belong to the science-fiction products. Two emblematic problems emerge with these characters: The new form of the body and the enigmatic possibility of the soul. The new physical and mental capacities result in paradoxes. In the cited films the partly iron and partly organic body can be, on the one hand, destroyed less easily but, on the other hand, it can be harmed easier (Terminator-films, RoboCop-series).
