Summary/Abstract: Based on his manuscripts, the study aims at modifying and, indeed, rectifying what we may know about the Hungarian inventor and Benedictine monk Ányos Jedlik (1800-1895). There are no reliable sources on Jedlik's childhood. Already as a monk he was tutored by Mór Czinár, who was also an accomplished physicist himself. For Jedlik, teaching physics and demonstrating the subject matter with experiments were inseparable. He had an extensive acquaintance with the contemporary scientific literature, and it was this knowledge that gave the directions to the blueprints of his machines for his research. These instruments were mostly built by technicians but the fine-tuning remained his own task. Jedlik made practical use of his exquisite theoretical knowledge not only by founding two factories or by giving advice to many others but also by supervising the running of the first engines in Hungary.
