THE WESTERN NOVEL DURING THE XVIIIth CENTURY. THE LIBERTINE NOVEL

Summary/Abstract: Le roman occidental du XVIIIe siècle balance entre la méfiance avec laquelle un genre « fictionnel » est regardé à une époque où le besoin de vérité se fait sentir plus vif que jamais et le problème de son apparent manque de codification. En partant de ce cadre général, notre travail s’occupe de plus près de la situation du roman libertin en France et de la situation du libertin, comme personnage-clé de ce type romanesque. Dans notre démarche, nous montrons que le roman libertin est – et cela non pas seulement en France – un genre « d’époque », car il reflète et se fait même conservateur d’un comportement social en vogue pendant le siècle des Lumières. En cela, il est par excellence un roman de la mondanité. De sa part, le libertin est un type social avant d’être un personnage littéraire. Individu partagé entre deux mondes – celui de la débauche et le « beau monde », le libertin est un excellent séducteur par l’action et par la parole : un acteur donc et un maître de la parole.During the XVIIIth century, the western novel faces a double obstacle : the distrust, as it is a « fictional » genre, while the public demands for truthfulness ; on the other hand, it seems to face a lack of codification. This is the starting point of our paper, in which we deal with the situation of the libertine novel and its main character, the libertine, in France. We show that the libertine novel is in all western Europe a genre of an epoch – the XVIIIth century – and that it reflects and preserves a fashionable social behaviour at that time. Thus, it appears to as as a worldly novel. As for the libertine, he is first a social type who then becomes a literary character. He leads a double life : the « beau monde » and the profligacy ; so he appears as a great seducer, both with his words and with his actions.
