Summary/Abstract: The article discusses social and political backgrounds on which a stereotype (mostly negative) of a Pole in the Ukrainians‟ consciousness is based. Polish-Ukrainian ethnic stereotypes were formed under the influence of confrontation between these two countries, which was based on uneven social relationships: master, nobleman = Polish, peasant, servant = Ukrainian. It was additionally reinforced by different confessions: Ukrainian = Orthodox Church follower, Polish = Catholic (who is trying to spread the faith on the East). The stereotype of a Pole presented in the article results from the analysis of folk material.
