Summary/Abstract: The idea about the Middle East as a region free from nuclear weapons is not new – it dates back to 1970s. Still, the current security situation in the Middle East has led most analysts to revisit and re-examine this issue. According to most of them, an intensive arms race in the Middle East is a threat to the long-term stability of the region. It seems that Israel, Iran and Egypt have been the key decisive factors for any success or failure of this idea over the past forty years. The absence of any real progress in altercations between Arabs and Israel, the international community’s suspicion towards any action in the region, and the reservation of the UN Security Council towards Iran’s nuclear programme – with a proviso that Iran is guilty until proven innocent – are the circumstances that must be taken into account in programmes that may lead towards implementation of the idea of making the Middle East free from nuclear weapons.
