Summary/Abstract: The most popular counting-out rhyme of the children of Armenia, Ala-bala-nitsa, is of Bulgarian origin. The paper deals with the Armenian variants of the text, the time and ways of its intrusion into Armenia, the Eastern European cognate counting-out rhymes, the origin of the expression ala-bala, and its occurrence in other traditions.
