Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the responses to questions from the European Social Survey in 2008 which allowed to evaluate the sense of security of residents of countries participating in such an extensive international survey of attitudes and opinions. Data from three areas ? personal security, welfare conditions and lack of threat of terrorist attacks.? related to the perception of security were examined. The perception of safety in various aspects was assessed as well as the variability of the answers was considered. The application of multidimensional scaling method allowed to indicate the differences in the perception of security by residents of countries with long experience in the European structures and the residents of countries which have recently become the members of the European Union.
