Summary/Abstract: At the very beginning of this war I wrote an essay, "Civilization against Barbarism". My first thought became the epigraph: Credo quia absurdum, or Certum est, quia impossible est). While St. Augustine and Tertulian through these saws thought in a highly speculative way of metaphysical meanings of transcendence and sense, I have been forced to consider the immediate worldly question of existence, of meaning and absurdity. Not as some contemplation, as nice serene meditation, but as a very concrete question of human survival, where peaceful citizens of a thousand-year-old civilization are faced with attacks of a darkened mind belonging to resuscitated barbarians. What a free spirit has left is to think and to fight: Certa viriliter, sustine patienter. For to abstain from opposing evil is the same thing as to accept barbarism.
