Summary/Abstract: Belgium, which became an independent country in 1831, is situated at the intersection of the Latin and the German cultures, and has always been split up by a linguistic boundary. This divides the country into two different cultural-linguistic communities, the Dutchspeaking North (Flanders) and the French-speaking South (Walonia). These linguistic-cultural differences have been accentuated by the divergent economic development of the two communities.
