Summary/Abstract: In January Polish government launched public consultation on the proposed changes to the national pension system. They will reduce the share of social security contribution to Open Pension Funds (OFE) from the current 7.3% to 2.3% in 2011–2012 (this percentage, however, will gradually increase to 3.5% in 2017). The difference will be transferred to the state-run pension system. Government’s proposals have sparked heated public debate in Poland. By invitation, in this special issue three leading Polish economists, Maciej Żukowski from Poznań University of Economics, Leokadia Oręziak and Marek Góra from Warsaw School of Economics, present their differing views on these recent pension developments.
