Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the results of a small-scale, qualitative study of families and their experiences from the reconciliation between working and family life in four countries: France, Greece, Poland and Spain. The aim of the research was to identify and compare main problems and obstacles in achieving a balance between occupational activities and family obligations, as well as ways and strategies of coping with possible conflicts between both fields. The study focused on five key aspects of reconciliation: childcare (and other support services) accessibility, division of housework, current situation in the labour market and involvement in public life. Besides of these aims, the study also tried to emphasize the meaning of gender roles and inequalities for harmonizing professional and family life. The research was a part of the activities of EQUAL Community Initiative Transnational Partnership “Life and Work” including partners from the four above-mentioned countries.
