Summary/Abstract: The Communization of the Romanian society in the late 40’s and early 50’s has not meant only political, economic and social changes, but also a new administrative system, including a different territorial-administrative framework. By the establishment of a three-tier system of local government – regions, districts (raioane) and communes – the communist government made a very clear distinction compared to the previous policy and demonstrated once again the dependence and loyalty to the Soviet Union. The new administrative division of the country facilitated an easier implementation of the five-year plan of Soviet economic model, and a more intensive control of rural areas. The study explores the evolution of the territorial-administrative map of Romania in the first decades of communist rule until the mid-60’s, especially how and why, the region and district divisions replaced the old judeţe.
