Summary/Abstract: In this article sociocultural implications of shame and honour are analysed. A few dimensions have been brought into discussion: male vs female honour, the significance of the terms marianismo and machismo in Latino cultures, sharaf and ‘ird in Arab societies, the meaning of shame and family control, and the importance of the Greek concept philótimo along with value change perceptions. Cross-cultural studies have demonstrated that individuals discuss the honour taking into consideration expressions as family values, social prestige maintainance, self-respect, individual achievements or independence from family. Furthermore, shame and honour may be perceived as two emblematically cultural concepts. If the first became a social control factor in many situations, the second one remains as an „icon” of individual identity and a main characteristic of social norms and values a persons could embrace.
