Summary/Abstract: The article aims at determining the function of speech-figures signifying silence in Paul Celan’s poetry. Those features can be situated at the boundaries of language since they lean towards the sphere of the radical silencing of any speech. Hence, they are supposed to outline the frame of the prosopopeic space, where the memory of the victims of the Holocaust is present and forms nearly mute trace of their absence. The author concentrates on the analysis of few poems from Sprachgitter volume (especially the title poem and Niedrigwasser) in relation to other texts by Celan (Meridian, poem from Die Niemandsrose volume) as well as Reiner Maria Rilke’s poem, The Panther.
